Thursday, Feb. 7th.

Reminders:
As we talked about yesterday, if you would like to re-write the short answer part of the Science MIA you will have the opportunity to do so tomorrow.

Homework:
Science - your Particle Project is now overdue if it is not handed in.

Update:
Science
-We have spent the past weeks exploring what heat and temperature are and how they transfer through different states of matter.  Students studied the particle model and connected it with their understanding of heat.
-Next week we will begin a project that allows students to apply what they have learned.  Everyone will design and build a model of an insulated house with the goal to stop as much heat energy transfer as possible.  There will be direct math connections, as the houses will need to meet specific height, perimeter and area specifications to qualify for testing.
-Look for the task sheet and other documents to be posted under the Science tab sometime next week.
Math
-We have just wrapped up our direct study of fraction/decimal/percent (but these will come up through our next topics as well).
-Students have started to explore algebraic equations with a single letter variable.  We are looking at strategies for solving these equations using the steps of:
1. Isolate the variable (decide how to get the variable alone)
2. Opposite Operations (use the inverse operation)
3. Both Sides (keep balanced, you do each operation to both sides)
-This study draws on what the students have learned about Order of Operations and Adding/Subtracting with positive and negative numbers.
-From our study of equations we will tie into the formulas for area and perimeter that are being used in our Science building task.
*There are new resources under the Math-Resources tab for this topic - a how-to video, some games, and some practice sites.
